Q. Do I need a doctor's referral before seeing a physiotherapist?
In Australia, physiotherapists are Primary Care Clinicians with expertise in diagnosing and managing a wide range of musculoskeletal injuries and conditions and therefore you don't need a doctor's referral to see a physiotherapist. However, a valid medical referral is necessary if your case is under or being managed by Work Cover, Third Party Insurances (i.e. Suncorp Insurance), Department of Veteran's Affairs or Medicare Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) program. In addition, your physiotherapist will often your medical background and at times liaise with your doctors to provide holistic care for your best recovery.
Q. What types of treatment will I receive?
Your physiotherapists are competent in using a wide range of treatment techniques, and the selection of the treatment techniques are tailored for you based on the physical examination to improve your condition effectively. Some of the commonly used treatments include manual muscle release, joint mobilization, deloading taping, western acupuncture, rehabilitation exercises and stretches. Your physiotherapist can also implement program for ergonomic modification to improve your work station, hydrotherapy and Pilate program to improve overall functionality.
Q. What shall I bring and wear during my initial physiotherapy visit?
Just bring yourself with ease of mind in comfortable stretchy shorts and T-shirt! It will also be beneficial if you can bring your previous investigation reports such as MRI, CT scan, Xray or ultrasound, or a medical report from your GP or specialist relevant to your current presentation for your physiotherapy assessment.
Q. Can I claim through my private health fund?
You can claim a part of your consultation fee through your private health fund if you have "extras" cover for physiotherapy and just pay the gap fee. It I best to check the policy of the cover and the subsequent gap fee directly with your health fund provider.
Q. Why's my health fund not paying as much as I hoped?
Private health funds all work differently and also depends on the type of policy you are on. If you are not hapi with your private health fund benefit, we recommend you shop around for a better deal. From our years of experience, we have found major health funds to be difficult with certain client's claim. These funds include and not limited to: Bupa, Medibank, Ahm, NIB & HCF. If you need assistance to choose a health fund for your situation, we recommend John Small Insurance Advisory.
